Interaction with Research
Our strategy places research-informed and research-led teaching at the core of our curriculum. UAL performed well in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, with 83 per cent of the research submitted graded as “world-leading” or “internationally excellent”. This places UAL in the overall top 30 UK research institutions in the UK for the quality of research submitted.
Many of our research-active staff lead and teach on our undergraduate and postgraduate courses. UAL has eight research centres. All have close relationships with taught programmes, leading to new courses, curricula and development of our pedagogies. We have established communities of practice and subject forums across our disciplines. For example, our Socially Responsive Design and Innovation Hub engages with many courses to help students meet societal challenges. Our Centre for Sustainable Fashion and Textiles Environment Design Research Group link directly back into the curricula and pedagogy of related programmes. MA Fashion Curation emerged from UAL’s Centre for Fashion Curation.
Pedagogic research informs and enriches our teaching and learning. Nine members of UAL staff submitted pedagogic material to the 2014 REF. Our Teaching and Learning Exchange includes dissemination of scholarship and research; pedagogic research; UAL-supported conferences, and publications exploring art and design pedagogy.
